Summary: Nami finds herself listening for something that is no longer there.

Zoro rarely laughs anymore.

It probably shouldn’t bother Nami so much, since she always feels a little uncomfortable when he laughs. That first time had actually scared her half to death, and it wasn’t just because he was laughing at how hopeless he and Luffy were, at how close they kept coming to getting killed.

It was the sound of it, sudden booming roar of a laugh, and it seemed to be coming right from his stomach, rocking him more than any waves. It was the way he sounded so unpractised at it, the way he sounded almost shocked, and Nami knew of Zoro’s reputation but nobody really knew of his past.

That surprise in his laughter, at the fact that he can laugh and actually mean it, makes Nami uncomfortable because it makes her ache.

There was a time when she thought she’d never laugh again, and she doesn’t pretend to know the world that Zoro came from but she can guess at the hurt he might be running from.

With each new crew member, Zoro laughs less and less.

Zoro isn’t the type to disappear into a crowd, and he isn’t any less like himself than usual, and Nami doesn’t really understand it.

Zoro’s laughter may make her uncomfortable, but she finds herself listening out for it in every conversation, in every minute of every day.

She looks to Luffy, and it still scares her a little that she can rely on one person so completely, and she knows Luffy relies on her just as implicitly.

Luffy doesn’t seem to notice, and if he does it apparently doesn’t bother him.

Nami begins to wonder if she’s imagining things, and deep, booming, terrifying laughter fills her dreams.

It’s a chill night when she finds them together. She’s exhausted from another day spent battling the Grand Line’s freak weather but she never slacks off of her watch, and it’s her turn to relieve Zoro. Only he’s not alone, and she can hear Luffy’s voice from the crow’s nest as she begins to climb the rigging.

Luffy is laughing. Zoro is not.

Neither of them attempt to leave, so she sits opposite them, and she can’t remember how long it’s been since it was just the three of them. It almost feels wrong; she’s grown so used to the wider crew, to Usopp’s constant chatter and Sanji’s fawning and Chopper’s excitement and Robin’s calming presence. Yet it feels oddly comfortable, and Nami settles down against the wood and yawns.

“Tired?” Luffy asks, stating the obvious as usual.

Nami nods and smiles back sleepily.

“Go back to bed,” Zoro says with a shrug. “We’ve got this.”

Nami just rolls her eyes and sticks out her tongue. “It’s my turn,” she points out. “You go to bed.”

Zoro smirks at her, like he’s bemused and impressed and like she’s completely predictable.

And it hits her, just like that.

Zoro rarely laughs anymore. But he smiles far more than she remembers him ever doing, and every smile is easy and real.

Zoro may not find life with Luffy and her as amusing anymore, but maybe that’s because he’s so content.

Zoro’s eyes narrow in suspicion, like he’s trying to read her train of thought, and she imagines the look on her face must be affectionate, or maybe exasperated.

“Nah, I’m cold,” Luffy sighs, and he flops against Zoro’s shoulder.

“Me too,” Nami announces, shifting to rest against Zoro’s other side.

“When did I become a hot water bottle?” Zoro scoffs, but his arms wrap around their waists instantly, and Luffy’s hand reaches across Zoro’s lap to squeeze Nami’s fingers, and it doesn’t really feel like old times, just the three of them sharing two rickety old boats and a barrel of apples on an endless ocean.

It feels better.

Zoro's laugh is terrifying. I can never tell if he's genuinely amused or gearing up to eat somebody's soul.

Aah, I find no words to describe my feelings, but it calmed me and melted my heart like a chocolate when put in a tea for a moment. It was indeed delicious~. Just.. you write like no other. I crave it, like a hopeless addict I am.♥ I'm amazed how well in here you explained why Zoro doesn't laugh as much as at the beginning. And I also loved how you showed it all from Nami's perspective, though she doesn't want to show it, but she cares for her family like no other. Thanks for showing this side of her too! *squishes in a hug. xD*

Now I'm craving chocolate and tea! XD Once again, you are faaaar too kind to me.

I love that aspect of Nami's character - she beats the crap out of the crew when they piss her off (which is regularly) but she's so fiercely protective of them, so aware of them. It's something I adore in Usopp as well - both he and Nami don't have superpowers, and if there's danger threatening them they run for their lives, but if there's danger threatening another member of the crew they're there to help fend it off. They're both amazing like that.

It's interesting, the way Zoro doesn't laugh like a crazed loon so much any more. You can see the longer he travels with the crew, the more seriously he takes things. He still acts like a little lost idiot, but it's more obvious that he has one eye on everyone all the time, making sure they're okay.

*squishy hug attack*

I miss the days when it was just the three of them. Zoro stopped laughing the day Sanji joined.
