Title: In Ashes
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Pairing: Pepper/Maya
Rating: PG
Words: 215
Notes: Canon character death (Maya). For
femslash100's Drabbletag, prompt "burned".
Pepper learns of Maya’s fate from Killian. Casually thrown into the conversation that he murdered the woman who helped turn him into a weapon, who helped him realise his dream of terrorism. Just another testament to what a cold and ruthless bastard he is.
It pisses Pepper off, because now Maya’s dead, Pepper can’t even be mad at her properly. She’s been robbed of that confrontation, of that closure.
She wanted her chance to learn how much of it was real. Hiding together in that room, curled up on the bed, Maya’s fingers held in her own, watching as Maya stubbornly blinked back tears. The softness of their kisses, the tremor in Maya’s hands when they slid up Pepper’s back. The heat in the way their bodies moved.
She needs to know, to understand, because everything felt so damn sincere.
It wasn’t all lies, Pepper is sure of that. But now she’ll never get to drag the truth from Maya, she’ll lie awake at night and wonder. She’ll taste the phantom of Maya’s lips and never know how much was betrayal and how much was desperation.
The Extremis burns beneath her skin, the lost look in Maya’s eyes burns within Pepper’s mind, but the frustration and hopelessness of it is what burns brightest of all.
