fan_flashworks, prompt "doorway".
They’re beautiful together. Pale skin, freckles, blonde hair vivid beside red. Kristoff’s arms are thick and strong, and he pulls Anna close. She looks so slender pressed up against him, almost fragile, but there’s a boisterous strength to the way she touches him, the way she kisses so feverishly.
Elsa watches with an ache in her chest.
Anna crawls into Kristoff’s lap, and he chuckles, kisses pretty pink marks into the curve of her neck as she arches for him. Her squirming makes him groan, and she giggles and wriggles more deliberately, playful teasing that comes so naturally to her.
There’s a stab of discomfort in Elsa’s hand, and she glances down to see that she is clinging to the doorframe, that she has frozen the wood beneath her palm. She tries so hard and she has learned more about her powers in this last year than in the entirety of her life beforehand, but there are still moments when she slips, there are still moments when she is afraid.
Elsa watches her sister, perfect in her happiness, and it fills her with joy to see Anna in love. But there are those weaker moments, dark and stealing over her without her permission, where she worries that she is dragging Anna down, that she is holding Anna back, and it frightens her so much it steals her breath.
“Elsa?” It’s Anna’s voice, and although there is a part of Elsa that wants to run, she cannot.
Because Anna is reaching for her, and Elsa is powerless to resist that hopeful smile on her sister’s face.
For so long, she has felt as if she is standing in a doorway, watching her life move on without her and never quite knowing how to step over the threshold. But she does not have to stand in this particular doorway a moment longer, and she resolutely ignores the ice as she steps closer to the bed.
Kristoff smiles at her, the same as always, his arm settling protectively around her waist. Elsa leans her head against him, and he kisses her hair, his presence warm and safe. Anna’s lips brush her cheek, and Elsa laughs as Anna makes a vain effort to straddle both of their laps at the same time, Elsa and Kristoff’s, before she’s forced to concede defeat, snuggling instead into the tight space between them.
Sometimes Elsa forgets when she is watching them that she is allowed to have this, that she is a part of this relationship too. But they’re so quick to remind her, and she feels right when they’re beside her, when she can feel the heat of their skin.
The ice on the doorframe is already melting, but none of them notice, too distracted by kisses and contentment.
