“Do you think this is our destiny?” Blink asks quietly. They’re sat together on the cold stone floor, Kitty’s arm around Blink’s chest, their fingers entwined.
Kitty wants to say no. She wants to say that this can’t be it, the group of them doomed to die over and over while she and Bishop give their past selves just enough warning to jump to the next base before it happens all over again. Surviving, yes, but not living, and she holds out hope that help will come, but it seems like a far-off, distant dream.
“Yes,” she says instead. Blink’s head is leaning back against her shoulder, and Kitty presses her face to pink hair, eyes closed. “We’re going to save everyone. That’s our destiny.”
Blink nods, like she approves of the answer. “What do you miss most?” she asks, thumb stroking over Kitty’s knuckles.
“Hot showers,” Kitty replies without hesitation, and the buzz of Blink’s laughter against her skin makes Kitty smile. “You?”
“Mattresses,” Blink admits, tilting her head back so she can look at Kitty’s face. There’s a teasing curve to her lips. “I would have enjoyed having you on a mattress.”
Despite the chill of the floor, heat coils through Kitty’s body. “Something to look for when you scout for our next base,” she suggests with a grin, and Blink raises their joined hands, kisses the heel of Kitty’s palm.
Kitty doesn’t have much, but they still have each other. Whatever their destiny, they face it together.
