In a tower high atop the palace, Aurora sleeps. She sleeps and she dreams of a place she does not know, an old and crumbling castle, where the stone floor is cold beneath her bare feet. Wind whistles down the halls and the shadows seem to growl at her, and Aurora pulls her cloak tight around her shoulders, frightened and alone.

Or not as alone as it appears, for there is laughter bouncing off the walls, cruel and mocking.

“Briar Rose,” a voice calls to her. “Aurora.”

“Who are you?” Aurora asks, and she does not mean to sound so timid. She takes a deep breath, holding her head up high, and tries again. “Show yourself!”

“Why, I’m right here,” the voice says, and Aurora turns with a gasp, finding a stranger who had not been there before. The woman before her is tall, dressed in black, with sallow green skin and horns atop her head, and her eyes burn.

“Who are you?” Aurora whispers. The woman’s appearance is shocking, and yet she cannot help but feel they have met before.

“My name is Maleficent,” comes the reply, thin lips pulling into a icy smile.

Aurora takes a step forward, despite her fear. “Where am I?”

“The Forbidden Mountain,” Maleficent answers. “Well, of a fashion. This is where your soul rests, although your body is elsewhere.”

“I don’t understand,” Aurora stammers. The walls are so high, and yet they feel as if they are closing in on her, trapping her. “What do you mean?”

“You are asleep, my dear,” Maleficent tells her, and her hand reaches out slowly, cups Aurora’s chin and tilts her head back. “And while you slumber, your soul shall reside here. With me.”

“I cannot go home.” The words are not a question, for Aurora finds she already knows the answer.

“You are home.” Maleficent’s fingers brush the hair from her face, stroke over her cheek. “You are mine, you have been since the day you were born. I have waited sixteen long years for you, my pet, but you are finally home.”

“You cursed me,” Aurora murmurs, and she knows not why she doesn’t shy away from Maleficent’s touch as fingertips slide over her collarbone.

“I claimed you,” Maleficent corrects, stepping close, and there is no heat to her body, like a void sucking the warmth from the room. “You belong to me now.”

It should terrify Aurora, but strangely the fear has lessened. As if there is truth to the words, and a strange form of comfort in that truth. She does not understand how she came to be here, nor why, but she does not fight the hand at the back of her neck, or the cold and hard kiss pressed to her lips, and Maleficent tastes like the darkness that surrounds them.
