10lilies, prompt "a keepsake".
Summary: She held it in her memory, sought to make it a reality again.
It had taken time. Countless expert opinions, far too many experiments gone wrong, and a fair few curious questions as why exactly the Princess would be making such a request. Nobody begrudged her the favour, they were all more than happy to help, but Vivi could tell that even those not brave enough to question royalty were all curious as to why she was so determined to get it right. They wondered why she would turn their products over in her hands, examining them and inhaling deeply, only to sigh wistfully and stare out into space, eyes glazed. Still, her voice would always be light and airy as she complimented them on their skills, but gently explained that she still hadn’t found what she was looking for.
Kohza had asked, because he’d never been one to bite his tongue around her, and she’d blushed and tried to explain that it was important to her without explaining why. And he’d watched her with shrewd eyes, but accepted her stammered words and not pushed any further.
It was evening when the final bottle was presented to her, and she felt her heart beat wildly, because something was telling her that search was finally over before she’d even lifted the ornate stopper. Crystal, curvaceous, simple in its elegance, and Vivi took a moment simply to hold it, the cold neck of the bottle a soothing presence in her palm.
A list of ingredients was read aloud as she turned the bottle reverently in her hand, hopes building. The expensive scent of orchids, and a touch of chrysanthemum. A sprig of wild heather, and a touch of vanilla. The generous spice of cinnamon, and the barest bitter touch of coffee beans. An odd combination, but every smell was drawn together, mixed and separated and contrasted and complimented, by the heavy tang of tangerines, earthy and brisk and strong enough to envelop the air around Vivi as she gently eased the stopper free.
She almost held her breath, nerves getting the better of her, but she couldn’t keep herself from inhaling the carefully crafted scent, and she couldn’t hide the tears that formed at the corner of her eyes. The entire court seemed to sigh in relief and happiness as a broad smile shone from her face, and she nodded hard enough to make her hair dance around her.
It had taken time, but she had found the perfume she had been looking for.
She’d excused herself for the night soon after, bottle held to her chest protectively. She placed the bottle on the marble counter as she undressed and washed, eyes flickering to it every few minutes, as though she was afraid it might just disappear. She carried to it to her bedroom, pressed against the silk of her nightdress, and sat on the edge of her bed, holding it in front of her. She simply stared at it for the longest stretch of time, watching the way the light caught and refracted around the crystal, the way the amber liquid inside glowed ethereally.
Eventually she seemed to stir from her daydreams, and rose to her feet. She once more pulled the stopper from the bottle, allowing the scent to tease at her senses, and then she held it over her pillow. Carefully, struggling to keep the tremor from her hands, she tipped the neck of the bottle lower, watching as a single, perfectly formed droplet rolled along the lip of the bottle’s opening, before splashing down onto her pillow. Her eyes studied the perfume as it soaked through the cotton and into the feathers underneath, before she sealed the bottle and carefully placed it on her dresser.
And then she flopped down on to the bed, regal grace forgotten, face pressing into the pillow, inhaling and sighing happily, and it was Nami’s scent that encompassed her. And Vivi had been so very glad to return to Alabasta, but it felt as though she had only just found that missing touch that made her feel like she was home.
