It still hits her hard. Waking up in the night and remembering that Anna’s lost, it’s distressingly easy for Elsa to fall into a spiral of fear that’s all too familiar. Anxiety, like an old enemy, always just a step behind her, waiting to catch her.
She sits up, gasping, clutching at her chest, ice forming under her fingers, and the panic, it’s too much, Elsa can’t escape from it.
Until a hand settles on her shoulder, and she feels the warmth of Emma’s breath against her ear.
“It’s okay,” Emma whispers, soft, reassuring. Wrapping her arms around Elsa, pulling her against Emma’s body, stroking her hair until the shivering stops. “It’s okay, I’m here, you’re safe.”
Elsa believes her.
A whole lifetime, she was taught that she can’t let anyone close, can’t lose control. Can’t trust anyone to help her with her burdens; they’re her responsibility alone.
Anna broke through all that, smashed down Elsa’s walls and dragged her into the sunshine.
And now Anna’s gone, and it would be so easy to tumble back into those terrible old habits.
But Emma tells Elsa that she’s safe, and Elsa believes her. Trusts this woman with all her heart, never mind how short their time together has been.
When she turns her head, Emma’s there for her searching mouth, with a kiss that chases the chill from Elsa’s bones, chases the nightmare from her mind.
The panic is familiar, but Elsa’s overcoming it, Emma’s light her beacon in the dark.
