100_women, prompt "courage".
Lady is expecting the rumours, of course. There’s always gossip, no matter how the neighbourhood dogs may like to pretend they’re above such nonsense, looking down their noses from behind their white picket fences and huge bay windows.
Jock and Trusty have offered to wed her, to end the pointed stares and whispered comments. Bless their hearts, but they just don’t understand.
Lady is happy, she’s in love, and she won’t hide away from a world that dares to tell her something so good and so wonderful could be wrong.
She’ll admit, it’s difficult sometimes. Dogs who were once her friends now fall silent when she passes by, suddenly finding themselves far too interested in sniffing trees they’ve sniffed a hundred times before to make eye contact with her.
But Lady always finds her courage in Duchess.
They stroll through the streets together, Lady’s copper hair bright against the white of Duchess’ fur. Their collars jingle in perfect time, tags polished and shining in the afternoon sun. They play together, Lady letting Duchess’ three kittens chase her, and they giggle and climb on her as she washes them afterwards. Duchess tells Lady about France whilst the kittens nap between them, about the food and the music and the culture, and Lady soaks in every word.
It’s hard to believe that anybody could think less of Duchess just because she’s a cat, but Lady only feels sorry for those who do. They’re missing out on knowing somebody so incredible, it’s their loss. Duchess likes to remind Lady that it simply means they get each other all to themselves, and Lady likes that idea.
Jim Dear and Darling have bought Duchess the most lovely wicker basket, but it’s sadly ignored. Every night Duchess curls up beside Lady, sharing her bed, the kittens pressing close as well. Lady sighs happily, her nose buried in the warm fluff of Duchess’ tail, falling asleep listening to the steady rhythm of Duchess’ purr.
