1drabble, prompt "kiss".
The smell of the tangerine trees is like home. The scent of earth and rain and fruit, taking her back easily to memories of the grove and Nojiko and Bellemere. Nami likes to curl up between the trunks and bags of soil, Merry’s deck solid beneath her and the sunlight overhead filtered through the leaves.
Luffy lies beside her, caught between being asleep and awake, his eyes unfocused as they stare up at the tangerines.
“Do you want a taste?” she asks.
She’s careful with her crop, tending to them almost obsessively, never letting anyone else prune or harvest them. Nobody ever tries to help themselves to her tangerines, even those who’ve turned stealing food into a hobby. Sanji never asks for the fruit, no matter the state of their food supplies, content to let her decide when it’s most ripe and succulent. They’re hers, and she’s happy to share, but it’s on her terms and always planned around the good of the trees.
She doesn’t offer them on a whim. But today, in the peace of the afternoon and with Luffy’s warmth beside her, she finds she wants to.
Luffy turns to her, eyes blinking slow but alertness forming there, attentiveness. “Yes,” he replies simply, and she expects him to reach up, to pluck a tangerine from its branch.
But instead he leans close, and Nami forgets to breathe as his mouth presses against hers, short but impossibly sweet.
“Thank you,” he says with an easy smile, and she feels herself blush. His attention turns back to the canopy of the trees, looking content, and Nami presses her face to his shoulder to hide the heat in her cheeks.
His fingers lace through hers, squeezing her lightly, and she can’t help her smile, the taste of him still on her lips.
