He smells it before she even enters the office. But Matt waits until she’s handing him his coffee to ask, “New perfume?”

He hears the surprised flutter of Karen’s eyelashes, the way Foggy’s just gone from actually shifting through papers to simply pretending to so that he can listen.

“Yeah,” Karen says, voice a little softer than usual. “Do you like it?”

He doesn’t. It’s not that the perfume’s unpleasant, not at all. But the artificial smell is nothing compared to the way he feels about her natural scent, warm and clean and intoxicating. Always there, clinging to her skin, impossible to ignore even beneath the coconut of her shampoo and the lavender of her laundry detergent and now the addition of this new perfume.

“Yes,” Matt says, taking the coffee. She always makes it strong, and it’s just another smell he has to filter out. “It suits you.”

Not exactly a lie. Everything suits her, even the grimy scent of the city that clings to everybody’s clothes, that permeates the air around them.

Through the flames that make up his world, he sees Karen duck her head. “Thanks,” she murmurs, almost shy.

He gives her a small smile and hears Foggy laugh under his breath. “Smooth.” Muttered low enough that Matt’s not sure if he’s supposed to hear or not.

Karen doesn’t hear it, at least, settling back at her desk, her body temperature raised in a pleased flush. It makes her natural scent stronger, and Matt ignores the rubber band Foggy flicks at him across the office and lets the smell wash over him.
