(One Piece) Safekeeping

Title: Safekeeping
Fandom: One Piece
Pairing: Nami/Robin
Rating: G
Words: 303
Timeline: Pre-Water 7/Enies Lobby
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] 100_women, prompt "dreams".

Nami wakes in the still of the night, senses instantly alert. Blinking sleep from her eyes, trying to taste the air, wondering if it’s the threat of a storm on the horizon that’s jerked her awake.

Robin lets out a soft sound, quiet and distressed, and Nami feels herself freeze in understanding at just what roused her from sleep.

Robin is having a nightmare.

They all have them, unfortunately. They all have ghosts in their pasts, memories that burn and frighten them behind closed eyes.

She doesn’t know what haunts Robin’s dreams, but the noises Robin makes are small and young and helpless.

Nami’s careful as she sidles closer. Murmuring assurances, loving nonsense whispered into the curve of Robin’s shoulder, hoping her voice will reach wherever it is that Robin’s trapped. Arms sliding around Robin’s waist, lacing their fingers together, stroking her thumb over the back of Robin’s hand.

It’s stupid, probably, to hold her like this. Robin could hurt her easily, without meaning to, but Nami doesn’t know what else to do. She hates to feel so useless, hates to see Robin so hurt, and hates the part of her that wants to crack Robin open and reveal all her secrets, because she knows that isn’t fair.

She feels it when Robin wakes, although she doesn’t flinch or thrash or make a sound. There’s a moment where her breath catches, and Nami doesn’t stop talking through it all, promising to always hold Robin close, to always protect her.

And then the tension is melting from Robin’s shoulders, leaning back into the comfort of Nami’s arms. Raising their joined hands so she can kiss Nami’s skin, lips against her fingertips, and Nami sighs and buries her face in Robin’s hair, feeling like she can breathe again, nightmares chased away for one more night.
