100_women, prompt "friends".
Wendy hates these awful garden parties. Lots of people she doesn’t care for, all standing around sipping sherry and nibbling on finger sandwiches and looking down their noses at one another.
She escapes as soon as she can.
There’s a deep woodland framing the grounds, and Wendy slips among the trees, determined to accidentally-on-purpose get lost for the remainder of the afternoon. She’s never been particularly fond of sherry, after all, and she’s even less fond of the way talk inevitably turns to the fact that she still hasn’t found a suitable husband.
People like to whisper, in a voice that means she can always very much hear them, that she’s destined for spinsterhood if she still hasn’t found a man at her age. Considering ‘her age’ is barely into her twenties, Wendy thinks they’re all overreacting somewhat.
She expects to be alone amongst the shelter of the trees, so she jumps almost a foot in the air when a voice calls, “Hello there!”
She looks all about and finally up into the canopy, and there’s another woman staring down at her with a cheeky smile. She has pretty blonde hair that’s pulled back into what was likely at one point a sensible style but is now an absolute mess, and she’s straddling a thick branch, skirt pulled up around her waist and tights on display.
Wendy likes her already.
The woman introduces herself as Alice, once she’s climbed back down to solid ground. She’s about the same age as Wendy, hates garden parties even more fiercely than Wendy does, if such a thing is possible, and she thinks nothing of taking Wendy’s hand and leading her further into the trees as she happily chatters on about anything and everything that crosses her mind.
It’s clear the two of them are destined to become fast friends.
By the time the sun begins to lower in the sky and a chill steals through the air, Wendy has realised she doesn’t just like this strange and playful woman. She loves her.
When Alice’s arm wraps sweetly around her shoulders at the first sign of a shiver coursing through Wendy’s body, she decides to make herself clear. She turns, presses her lips gently to Alice’s mouth, feeling the heat of her breath.
It’s rash, impulsive, but Wendy learned many years ago that adventure comes with risk and she should always fight for what she believes in.
Apparently it is a lesson Alice has learned too, because her surprise melts into a wide grin. She turns, hands gripping Wendy’s arms, enthusiastically tumbling her back against the ground, and Wendy’s delighted laughter is muffled beneath Alice’s lips.
Perhaps these garden parties aren’t so bad, after all.
